Abstract

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a disease characterized byhematopoietic and progenitor stem cells disorder, resulting in theirproliferation and accumulation in bone marrow which leads tohematopoietic failure. It is an aggressive form of cancer that typicallydemands quick decision-making. In case of AML, the addition of drugefflux inhibitors to the chemotherapeutic regimen may improve outcomesin patients. With the advancement in treatment strategies, patients cannow receive chemotherapy, radiation therapy or additional stem celltransplants. Specific genetic mutations in leukemic cells provide thedirection for treatment and determine the overall survival rate ofpatients. Older patients have adverse treatment consequences as age isan important factor in AML prognosis. We critically reviewed multipleexisting therapies for AML. Optimization of traditional therapies remainmajor concern of scientists. However, little bit advancement has beenmade in current years. There is immense need of novel and targetedtherapies to treat AML and reduce its relapse chances.
